Why convert AVIF to JPG?
AVIF is increasingly what websites and some Android phones produce. It’s efficient, but desktop software support is patchy.
What to expect
- If your browser can’t decode AVIF itself, a WebAssembly AV1 decoder (libavif via jSquash) takes over.
- Transparency becomes your chosen background colour.
- Animated AVIF (AVIS): only the first frame.

The two formats
AVIF: AV1 Image File Format (AOMedia)
The newest widely supported web format. Often smaller than WebP at the same quality, but slow to encode and still unknown to many desktop programs.
JPG: JPEG (ISO/IEC 10918-1)
The universal photo format. Lossy compression in 8×8 pixel blocks, no transparency, opens absolutely everywhere.

What is an AVIF file?
An image compressed with the AV1 video codec inside a HEIF-style container. It often beats JPG on size at equal quality.
Why can’t I open AVIF files on Windows?
Windows Photos needs the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store. Converting to JPG avoids that.
Is AVIF to JPG lossy?
Yes, JPG re-compresses. At quality 90 the difference isn’t visible in normal viewing.
