Why convert WebP to JPG?

Browsers serve WebP to save bandwidth, so “Save image as” often gives you a .webp file. Older Photoshop versions, Windows Photo Viewer, many print services and marketplace upload forms still reject it.

What to expect

  • Transparent areas become the background colour you choose (white by default), because JPG has no transparency.
  • Animated WebP: only the first frame is converted.
  • Converting a lossy WebP to JPG compresses it a second time; use quality 90+ to keep generational loss low.

How to convert WebP to JPG

The two formats

WebP: WebP (Google, 2010)

A web format with both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency. Every current browser shows it, but older desktop apps and some upload forms reject it.

JPG: JPEG (ISO/IEC 10918-1)

The universal photo format. Lossy compression in 8×8 pixel blocks, no transparency, opens absolutely everywhere.

Why do websites use WebP?

Lossy WebP files are typically 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs according to Google’s published compression study, which makes pages load faster.

Will transparency survive WebP to JPG?

No, JPG cannot store transparency. Pick a background colour, or convert to PNG instead.

Can I convert WebP to JPG on a phone?

Yes. This page works in Safari and Chrome on iPhone and Android, and the files never leave the phone.
