Why convert JPG to WebP?
WebP typically saves a quarter to a third of the bytes of a JPEG at similar visual quality, which speeds up pages on mobile connections.
What to expect
- Quality 75–82 is a good web default.
- EXIF metadata (camera, GPS) is not copied.
- If your browser can’t encode WebP natively (older Safari), a WebAssembly libwebp encoder is used.

The two formats
JPG: JPEG (ISO/IEC 10918-1)
The universal photo format. Lossy compression in 8×8 pixel blocks, no transparency, opens absolutely everywhere.
WebP: WebP (Google, 2010)
A web format with both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency. Every current browser shows it, but older desktop apps and some upload forms reject it.

Does JPG to WebP lose quality?
It re-compresses, so a little. At quality 80+ it is hard to see on a normal screen.
How much smaller will WebP be?
It depends on the photo; 25–35% is typical for photographs. The results list shows the exact before/after size of each file.
Can I use WebP on my WordPress or Shopify site?
