Good web quality, much smaller.

Downsizes only; SVG is drawn at this size (default 1024).

E.g. 500 or 2000 for a “max 2 MB” form. Quality, then pixel size, is lowered until it fits.

Why convert JFIF to JPG?

A JFIF file is already a JPEG inside; only the extension differs. Windows often names JPEGs saved from a browser “.jfif” because of a registry setting, and websites that check the extension then refuse them.

What to expect

  • With quality 100 and no resizing you get a fresh JPEG of the same picture; for a byte-identical file just rename .jfif to .jpg.
  • Orientation is applied so photos stay upright.
  • EXIF metadata is not copied.

How to convert JFIF to JPG

  1. Tap Choose images or drag your JFIF files onto the light box (up to 100).
  2. JPG is already selected. Adjust quality or the longest edge if you need to.
  3. Press Convert to JPG, then save files one by one or as one ZIP.

  • Windows: Turn on View → File name extensions in File Explorer, rename photo.jfif to photo.jpg and confirm. The data is already JPEG.
  • Mac: Select the file, press Return, change .jfif to .jpg and choose “Use .jpg”.

These work one file at a time; the converter above handles a whole batch and lets you set quality, size and a file-size limit.

The two formats

JFIF: JPEG File Interchange Format

Not really a different format: a .jfif file is an ordinary JPEG. Windows and Chrome sometimes save downloaded JPEGs with the .jfif extension, which many upload forms then reject by name.

JPG: JPEG (ISO/IEC 10918-1)

The universal photo format. Lossy compression in 8×8 pixel blocks, no transparency, opens absolutely everywhere.

JFIF to JPG: questions

Is JFIF the same as JPG?

Yes, for practical purposes. JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is the standard wrapper most JPEG files use, so a .jfif file is a JPEG with an unusual extension.

Can I just rename .jfif to .jpg?

Yes. Because the data is already JPEG, renaming the extension works and loses nothing. Converting here is useful when you have many files or want to resize or shrink them at the same time.

Why does Windows save images as JFIF?

Windows maps the image/jpeg file type to the .jfif extension in some setups, so Chrome and Edge use it when you choose “Save image as”. Changing the default needs a registry edit, so renaming or converting is easier.

Does converting JFIF to JPG lose quality?

Re-encoding is lossy, but at quality 95–100 the difference cannot be seen. Renaming is the lossless alternative.
